1940 Census

The 1940 census was released this week. It was taken the first week of April that year. The Lavery family was living at 951 Northrup Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas. Part of the national snapshot.

The family is split over two pages with the youngest, Bob and Frank, at the top of the second page. The census was taken on April 6 so Ralph was still a couple of weeks away.

Ages are as follows:
Grandpa..34
Grandma..30
Shirley..10
Ed..5
Chuck..4
Bob..2
Frank..2

The house is listed as owned rather than rented and had a value of $2000. A quick check of the neighboring houses shows they were renting for $10 to $16 per month. Level of education completed shows Grandpa finished 9th grade while Grandma went through 8th grade. Shirley is listed as finished 3rd grade so currently in the 4th grade. I assume Ed was in his first year of school but the rest were still home full time. Picture that.

Most of the rest that can be gleaned here deals with Grandpa;s employment. He is working at the peanut plant 40 hours per week for an annual wage of $1560 and he worked 52 weeks in 1939. That is $30 per week or 75 cents per hour!!

This is the Google "street map" to see what it looks like today. You can play with navigation tool in the upper left corner to change the view, look left and right and across the street.

According to Zillow in 2012 the value of the house was $20,900. That site shows it has 708 square feet, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, built in 1930, lot size is 3485 square feet.
